Coffee to water ratio, made simple

Specialty coffee brewed at home

If you change one thing about your home coffee, change this. The ratio of coffee to water decides whether your cup comes out strong, weak, or just right, and most disappointing coffee at home comes down to guessing it.

Start at 1 to 16

Use 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water. For a single mug that is about 18 grams of coffee to 290 grams of water. Grams, not scoops. A small kitchen scale is the cheapest upgrade you can make and it pays off every single morning.

Then move it to taste

Want it stronger? Go to 1 to 15. Lighter and more tea like? Try 1 to 17. Small moves, real difference. Once you find your number, write it down and brew it the same way every day. Consistency is what lets you actually taste the coffee instead of chasing it.

Ratio is not the same as grind

If the ratio is right and it still tastes off, the grind is usually the culprit. We break that down in why your coffee tastes sour or bitter, and the full method lives in how to brew a better pour over.

Fresh beans matter most of all. Get on the drop list and we will text you when the next coffee lands.
